Two places can record the same daily rainfall total while experiencing completely different weather.
One location might receive the rain gradually over several hours, while another receives nearly the same amount during an intense downpour lasting a short period.
Rainfall intensity matters because very heavy rain falling quickly can overwhelm drainage and produce flooding more easily.
A single rainfall number therefore doesn't describe the full experience of the rainy day.
