A pet microchip doesn't continuously transmit an animal's location.
It contains an identification number that can be read using a compatible scanner when a lost pet is found. That number can then be connected with registration information used to contact the owner.
Because the chip doesn't require GPS or a conventional battery, it can remain implanted for years.
Keeping the associated contact details updated is an important part of making the system useful.
