A catchy piece of music can continue repeating internally long after the actual sound ends. Scientists call these involuntary musical images earworms. Songs with repetitive melodies and distinctive rhythmic patterns are especially likely to become stuck.

Trying aggressively not to think about the song can sometimes make it return even more. Most people experience earworms at least occasionally. The speakers can stop while the brain keeps the playlist going.
