When lakes freeze or the temperature changes quickly, the ice expands and contracts. These movements create vibrations that produce eerie humming, whistling, or laser-like sounds.

The noises can travel long distances across frozen lakes. Many people mistake them for science fiction sound effects when hearing them for the first time. Frozen lakes can become natural musical instruments.
