Memory isn't like replaying a video. Every time you remember something, the brain rebuilds that memory from stored pieces. During this process, small details can accidentally change or mix with new information. This is why two people can honestly remember the same event differently.
Researchers have shown that people can even become confident about memories that never actually happened. The brain isn't trying to lie—it simply reconstructs the past. Sometimes, confidence in a memory doesn't guarantee it's accurate.
