
Not all tears are the same. Your body produces three different types of tears: basal tears to keep your eyes moist, reflex tears to wash away irritants like smoke or dust, and emotional tears triggered by strong feelings. Each type has a different purpose and slightly different composition.
Emotional tears even contain different proteins and hormones compared to other tears. Scientists are still studying why humans cry because of emotions. A simple tear is more complex than most people realize.
