Unlike humans and many other mammals, cats cannot taste sweetness. Scientists discovered that cats lack a functional gene responsible for detecting sweet flavors. Because they are obligate carnivores, their diets naturally consist almost entirely of meat, making sweet foods unnecessary for survival.

Instead, cats are much more sensitive to the taste of proteins and certain amino acids. This unique adaptation reflects millions of years of evolution as specialized hunters.
