About 71% of Earth's surface is covered by oceans, making them the largest habitat on the planet. The oceans contain nearly all of Earth's water and play a major role in regulating the climate by absorbing and storing heat. They are home to millions of species, including whales, sharks, coral reefs, and countless microscopic organisms. Scientists believe that much of the deep ocean remains unexplored because of its extreme pressure and darkness.

The ocean also produces a significant portion of the oxygen we breathe through marine plants like phytoplankton. Protecting the oceans is important because they support life both underwater and on land.
