The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) firmly shut down social media rumors claiming tension exists between ranking military generals and Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. over his alleged dual citizenship.
In a press briefing on June 23, at Camp Aguinaldo, AFP Navy spokesperson Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad dismissed reports that a majority of generals would file a case against Teodoro, calling the claim "a joke that should be laughed at."
AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Trinidad reinforced this stance, stating the military will not dignify "baseless and unverified allegations" meant to drag the professional, non-partisan institution into politically motivated drama.
Concurrently, the DND legal team labeled a perjury complaint recently filed against Teodoro before the Office of the Pasay City Prosecutor as a meritless "fishing expedition."
Assistant Secretary Erik Dy, chief of the DND Legal and Legislative Affairs Service, countered that the complaint shifts the burden of proof to the State instead of providing actual, competent evidence.
Dy emphasized that “until credible, verified proof is presented, the legal actions remain built entirely on speculation and unproven accusations.”
Defense officials clarified that the rumors surrounding Teodoro’s dual citizenship are old narratives resurrected with clear, ulterior motives.
DND spokesperson Assistant Secretary Arsenio Andolong stated that Teodoro formally surrendered and renounced his Maltese passport back in 2021 before running for senator.
Furthermore, the defense chief fully disclosed the prior passport's existence to the Bureau of Immigration, the Commission on Elections, and the Commission on Appointments long before taking his current cabinet post.
