To install an operating system (OS) on an SSD using Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Intel RST), you’ll need to load the Intel RST driver during OS installation so the installer can recognize the SSD—especially when the BIOS is set to RAID mode.
WHEN IS INTEL RST DRIVER NEEDED?
You’ll need the Intel RST driver during OS installation if:
- Your BIOS SATA mode is set to RAID (not AHCI).
- You're using a RAID array of SSDs or HDDs.
- The Windows installer cannot detect your SSD even though it’s properly connected.
STEP-BY-STEP: Installing OS with Intel RST Driver
- Restart and enter BIOS/UEFI (commonly F2, DEL, or ESC).
- Set SATA Mode to RAID.
- Save and exit.
- Go to your motherboard or laptop manufacturer's website (preferred).
- Or get from Intel:
Intel RST F6 Driver Download (Latest)
- Extract the ZIP and copy the driver folder to a USB flash drive.
- Plug in the USB with the RST driver.
- Boot from your Windows installer (USB/DVD).
- On the “Where do you want to install Windows?” screen, you may not see any drives.
- Click “Load driver”.
- Browse to your USB > locate the folder with RST driver.
- Select the correct driver version for your system (e.g. x64 for 64-bit).
- Once loaded, your SSD should now appear.
- Select the SSD or RAID volume.
- Format if needed, then install Windows as usual.
OPTIONAL: Install Full Intel RST Software After Setup
Once Windows is installed:
- Download and install full Intel RST software (not just driver) from your OEM or Intel's website.
