According to National Geographic, In a rare and poetic event, an abyssal anglerfish, known scientifically as Melanocetus johnsonii or the black seadevil, was observed near the ocean’s surface off the coast of Tenerife, Spain. This deep-sea dweller, typically found at depths between 200 and 2,000 meters, was filmed in broad daylight for the first time. The sighting occurred on January 26, 2025, near Playa San Juan, approximately two kilometers from Tenerife’s coast. Marine biologist Laia Valor spotted the fish during a shark research expedition, and marine photographer David Jara Boguñá captured the footage. The anglerfish, displaying its bioluminescent lure, was observed swaying near the sea surface, showcasing its distinctive features. Unfortunately, the fish was in poor condition and survived only a few hours after being spotted. It has since been transferred to the Museum of Nature and Archaeology in Santa Cruz de Tenerife for further study. Researchers are intrigued by this unprecedented behavior and are exploring possible explanations, including illness, disorientation due to ocean currents, or evasion of predators.
