nice! ax2 is a wifi6 router, so you'd probably prefer that.
routeros gives you so much more capability than most, possibly any, consumer-grade router. i haven't tried blocking youtube ads, because i have a premium subscription. i also wouldn't think there's a way to do that 100%, but i'd love to be corrected.

unfortunately the ax2 wasnt mine. my brother gave me the white model instead. i might buy the ax2 someday. still researching if routeros can block yt commercials. if blocking youtube ads is not possible on mikrotik routers, i might use pi-hole instead.

i don't think you can do that with pihole, either. it has to do with how google serves content and ads from the same host. but i haven't looked at this for a long time and things could have changed. good luck!

also, the hap ac would be perfectly fine if your internet connection is less than 1000 Mbps.

you're probably right about pihole right now. i have read somewhere that google/youtube now changes its ad delivery to yt viewers nowadays by testing server sided ad injection which is starting to worry non-premium youtube viewers like me. (and you too.) i might get yt premium if they made the server sided ad standard.

i guess i will be buying my own hap ax2 instead of pi-hole. btw my internet is less than 1000 mbps. i only got 300-400 maximum mbps when connected on a 5ghz WIFI PLDT fiber modem. I mostly stay upstairs on my room close to where the hap ac routerboard installed. I do get 60-90 mbps maximum which is decent speed. When the hap ax2 arrives, i will replace my old cat 4 cable with a cat 6 to maximize the full potential of the hap ax2. i might configure my PLDT fiber modem too it seems the gigabit wasn't enabled by default when i tried using cat 6e cable direct from my modem and i got only 90 mbps maximum. 💀

google makes money off of ads, so it's in their interest to prevent ways to circumvent that, other than by paying for a premium subscription. we have a family plan that still works out for us (cost/benefit), because we use it a lot, as well as youtube music.

cat4? that was for the old voice-only phone connections (and a bit of 10Base-T). i'm surprised you're getting 300-400 mbps! by all means get cat6 cable/s - shouldn't cost too much.

the ax2 would be a significant upgrade on the ac2 not only for the change from AC to AX wifi, but also for the increased data path between the external ports and the cpu gets boosted from 1gbps shared by 5 ports (+ 1gbps dedicated to the sfp cage) in the ac2 to 5gbps shared by 5 ports. you'd also be going from single-core to quad core cpu. all good stuff!

a few Qs if you don't mind, as i'm not familiar with how fibre is set up in the Philippines (wasn't available when i was living there)... what is a "5ghz WIFI PLDT fiber modem"? apart from calling it a "modem", which is the wrong term, is it a router? my real question is why does it have to be in the chain? can't you just go straight to the mikrotik?

the way we have it here, fibre is terminated at the optical network terminal installed in each dwelling, and you can opt to get a router from the RSP, or use your own.

it's typically:
[ONT] -cat6- [WiFi router (either from RSP or your own)] -cat6- [rest of your wired network]

or for some of us (the more geeky ones):
[ONT] -cat6- [router (your own)] -cat6- [WiFi access point/s + rest of your wired network]

also available is multi-gig fibre service at 2000/2000 mbps, 4000/4000 mbps, and even 8000/8000 mbps, for those who like having a speedtest boner.
