Ecclesiastes 5:5 (KJV) Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.

Our words matter. Especially when our words take the form of promises, vows, and guarantees. If we make a promise, the expectation is that we keep it. Our legal systems recognize the enforceability of written contracts. And God remembers the promises we make. If we can’t (or won’t) keep our promises, we are wise to not make them.

Heavenly Father, You alone are faithful. You keep Your promises and Your word never fails. I confess that I have been careless with vows and promises. Help me to consider the weight of my words and to temper my promises with wisdom, so that I may oblige myself only to the things that I can do, and the things that honor You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgment and justice in a province, wonder not at the matter: for he that is {f} higher than the highest regardeth; and there are higher than they.
(f) Meaning, that God will address these things, and therefore we must depend on him.
