Description

Ecclesiastical Latin IV: Passive Voice and the Nicene Creed
Ecclesiastical Latin IV builds on students' previous study of Latin and focuses on developing a thorough understanding of the passive voice as it functions in Ecclesiastical Latin. Students will study the formation and use of the present, imperfect, and future passive, the perfect passive system, passive participles, the passive periphrastic, and related constructions. Particular attention will also be given to distinguishing passive forms from deponent and semi-deponent verbs.
The course begins with a systematic study of the passive voice, providing students with the grammatical foundation needed to recognize, parse, and translate increasingly complex Latin sentences. As the course progresses, students will apply these skills through guided translation and analysis of authentic Ecclesiastical Latin texts. Selected prayers, Psalms, and liturgical texts will provide opportunities to encounter passive constructions in their natural context.
The course culminates in a detailed translation and grammatical analysis of the Nicene Creed. Students will examine its rich use of passive forms, participles, and related constructions while developing greater independence in reading Ecclesiastical Latin. By the end of the course, students will be better prepared to read the authentic Latin texts of the Church with greater confidence, accuracy, and understanding.

This course is designed for students who have completed introductory Latin coursework and possess a basic command of Latin morphology, vocabulary, and syntax. It is intended for students who wish to develop their ability to read and understand Ecclesiastical Latin through the study of passive voice and authentic Christian texts, including prayers, Psalms, and the Nicene Creed.
