TSUNAMI WARNING
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised a tsunami warning in three provinces in the country — Catanduanes, Northern Samar and Eastern Samar — following the magnitude 6.6 earthquake that struck Gigmoto in Catanduanes at 8:54 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, 2023.
In an advisory, Phivolcs said residents in Catanduanes, Northern Samar and Eastern Samar must stay away from the beach and not go to the coast, as wave heights of less than one meter above the normal tides will be experienced in these areas.
It said the first tsunami waves will arrive between 9:02 p.m. Tuesday and 12:54 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, 2023. “These waves may continue for hours,” Phivolcs said.
It advised people whose houses are located very near the shoreline of these provinces to move farther inland.
The magnitude 6.6 earthquake had a depth of 9 kilometers. It was felt at Intensity 2 in Palo, Leyte. | LMY
