Introduction:
The Korean Wave, also known as Hallyu, has become a global phenomenon in recent years. With the rise of K-Pop music and K-Drama television shows, the influence of Korean culture has spread far beyond the borders of its homeland. This influence is particularly evident in the Philippines, where K-Pop and K-Drama have become increasingly popular among the youth. This research aims to investigate the extent of the influence of K-Pop and K-Drama on the Filipino youth and how it affects their cultural identity.
Citation:
According to a study conducted by the Korea Foundation in 2017, the Philippines is the fifth-largest market for K-Pop music in the world, with a significant percentage of the fans belonging to the teenage and young ãdül† demographic (Korea Foundation, 2017). The study also revealed that K-Drama has a similar impact on the Filipino audience, with the television series being dubbed in the local language and aired on mainstream television channels (Kim & Kim, 2019).
These findings suggest that K-Pop and K-Drama have become an integral part of the Filipino youth's entertainment and cultural consumption. However, it remains unclear how this exposure to Korean culture affects their sense of identity and perception of their own culture. This research aims to address this gap in literature and provide insights into the influence of K-Pop and K-Drama on the Filipino youth's cultural identity.
