Freddy, the African-American soldier assisting the French Army, returns as the main supporting character, and active emphasis shifts to Freddys younger brother, James, who joins to fight alongside him. Much like Freddys experiences in the original games — Jamess story is one about a black soldiers experiences in the early 1900s, and the tale that unfolds is one of riches and emotion. The narrative touches on elements of the war few games have, particularly starting with his early chapters covering the segregation in the U.S. Army.Valiant Hearts Coming Home delves into Freddies brothers story, James, from his time on the field at the start of deployment through his end in the First World War, and highlights many black soldiers struggles within the U.S. Along with facing the rigors of World War I, Freddies brother James and other Black soldiers in his unit struggled with the everyday bigotry they encountered from fellow soldiers both home and overseas. What makes the story of Freddy the most harrowing of any of the characters is what happens in the aftermath of World War One.

After the war, things begin to look up for James, a musician and soldier, because he is going to go home very soon, and will get to see Freddy and Anna – they are on their way back to America. He survives only because Freddy shoves him off of a path, and although Freddy survived an explosion, Freddy is severely wounded. During this time, Anna stays with him and helps both musician and foot soldier James to recover, the two ultimately becoming a couple.A narrative-driven game set during the First World War, it does not focus on war tactics or the act of shooting at your own man, instead focussing on personal, emotional stories about individuals affected by war. Themes of race, nationalism, friendship, and individual heroism were explored, with the end result largely hitting many of the same sad, emotional notes as The Great War.
