The story of Cain and Abel, I have always thought to be a story of envy. That strong temptation that you and I would feel when encountering people more fortunate than us. Our tendency to assasinate (Including character assasinating) these people.
It describes this very tendency of humans as observed to this day, including each and everyone of us. This is why I dont understand the point of Fundamentalist Christians persistence that "we are Abel's descendants, not Cain's", when in reality, we still observe this time and time again, we are more like Cain than Abel.
But moving on, it doesnt end there.
What I find interesting is the following lines.
I suspect, like i did, a lot of people was unsettled by how this went. Seems unfair and irrational...I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
But the Lord said to him, “Not so; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. So Cain went out from the Lord’s presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
As described earlier, we understand that envy is a seed that is a POISON towards aggression and chaos, we find that this story also points out the ANTIDOTE, to keep peace and order.
Time and time again we have seen this go the other way. Countless wars, arguments, pettiness, leading to endless conflict. The chaos in our societies. Revenge after revenge after revenge. The infliction of our personal sense of justice to those against our ideals.
So, what was the antidote? Forgiveness. And no, not the forgiveness that forgets. Cain was marked to remind everyone of his misdoing.
Forgiveness despite remembering.
The only true form of forgiveness.
The forgiveness that would keep peace in the society, but also peace from within the self.
Thanks for Reading
