In efforts to prevent scams, fake news, and other fraudulent mobile activity, the Senate has approved on its third and final reading a bill that will require subscribers to register and present a valid ID before purchasing a SIM card.

Once passed, Senate Bill 2395, or the SIM Card Registration Act will end criminal activities conducted or enabled through mobile phones, the internet or other electronic communication devices.

And if you register with a fake identity? That can earn you jail time—the use of fictitious identities to register SIM cards or spoofing ranges from six months to twelve months of imprisonment, or a fine of P200,000.

The bill will also prohibit the unauthorized sale of registered SIM cards, and failure to comply with registration requirements.

The lawmakers hope that this will finally put an end to trolls and fake account users.
