Rarely opens PHC
It's not often we come across a vehicle price list from the '90s. These are not something we keep in our personal archives, so it's nice to see those sharing it and reminding us of days gone by. The list we stumbled upon comes from Toyota, the country's top-selling brand at the time.
With that, it gives us a good barometer of what car prices were like during that time, specifically, 1995. But before we look at the prices, there are a few takeaways from the 26-year-old list.
We've always known Toyota to have one of the widest variety of models available in the country, but the line-up from 1995 pales in comparison to the one today. Back then, they had just seven models to offer. These were the Corolla, Corona, Crown, Tamaraw FX, LiteAce, Hiace, and Hilux. All in all, there were 17 variants among the models they sold back then, and that includes the manual and automatic versions. For reference, the modern-day Vios and Innova have 16 variants available combined.
Another thing worth pointing out is the locally-assembled models. Out of the seven models sold in 1995, five were made in the Philippines. The cars that rolled out of the Paranaque and Santa Rosa plants were the Corolla, Corona, Crown, Tamaraw FX, and the LiteAce. Yes, the Crown was built here right up until 1999.
And now, here are the prices for Toyota's model range from 1995.
You might say that cars back these were a lot more affordable than today. After all, the idea of a PHP 409,000 for a brand-new car today sounds very appealing. But before you jump to that conclusion, you have to remember a little thing called inflation.
A hair over PHP 400,000 doesn't sound like a lot for a car these days, but it was a big chunk of cash 26 years ago. At the time, anything over PHP 550,000 could be considered a premium model. With that in mind, the PHP 1,800,000 price tag on the Crown was eye-watering.
Seeing this old price list puts things into perspective for modern cars. Back then, features such as power windows and a CD player were reserved for luxury cars. Today, we demand touchscreens and some form of phone connectivity even in the most basic models. Yes, more cars are creeping towards the PHP 1,000,000 mark these days, but the standard equipment is much longer than the mega-buck luxury cars from 1995. There is no arguing the value proposition of the modern car.
Still, it's nice to revisit the past and spend a few minutes basking in the nostalgia of the era.
That's why time travel must exist.
