Look up the definition of pretense, re-read my statement, and then maybe you'll catch my point.
Is it wise to assume that there'd be less conflict with absence of religion? You do realize that religion is a common point that unites different individuals and by abolishing it, there'd be more differences to settle, causing more cr@cks and eventually conflict.
My problem with your view point is that you reject and admonish the idea that religion is now an important foundation of our society and is good for the most part. You turn a blind eye on on its harmonious side and instead focus on the actions of its war-mongering extremists or corrupt minority just because it is aligned with your views.
I pity and sympathize with war victims but it was the blades, bullets, and bombs of soldiers acting under the command of powerful figures with their own hidden agenda that brought pain and death, not religion. Even with ancient crusades that pins it on religion, who's to say that it wasn't for the loot or territory that came with victory?
I had to look up the list of ten commandments to find the answer to your questions. Commandments 6 and 10 right? Though, this only shows that the church made an effort to discourage us from commiting bad things, regardless of the commandments' authenticity.
My family, relatives and some of my friends, who are believers unlike me, are living testaments on the positive influence of religion on the development of their moral compass. My time at a Christian school made me neither a saint nor a believer, but I at least learned not to go around calling people deluded (side-effect of panacea called religion according to you). We're not bullies or criminals or even mean. So no, I disagree that religion didn't help shape our attitudes and moral compass. We're also pretty civil and have gone a long way from being tribal, as you claim.
In the end, aren't all wars, even the crusades, simply a struggle for power rather than religion? Have you considered that these so-called crusades are caused by powerful, manipulative, and ambitious men who only use religion as pretense to rally men that can do their bidding?
You want something or someone to blame for this cruelty? Blame human nature. Men are capable of both methodical and senseless violence.
I believe that Religion is just a tool that can unite and divide the people depending on how it is used. The majority can continue to use it and enjoy solidarity and unity. The spiteful minority, like you who have extreme prejudice and can't respect the preference of others, is what divides us not the tool itself.
What about schools then? Similarly, they divide the masses (like religion) into the educated and uneducated which is also the root of other issues in our society like wage gap and other inequality issues. Should we also abolish this useful tool that helped us in making advancements and breakthroughs simply because it has "side-effects"?
In conclusion, if we all learned to respect our differences with each other (culture, belief, tradition, religion) instead of being a bigot, there'd be less things to fight over. We could at least agree on that, right?
