We are featuring this portrait of José Rizal on display at the Museo ni Jose Rizal Fort Santiago by Telesforo Sucgang whose 166th birth anniversary is today.

In this painting, Sucgang showed Rizal as he saw him and without any embellishment that the hero himself wassaid to have complained about it. Sucgang was himself a renaissance man who was also knowledgeable in sculpting and music, and taught in various art schools until his death on 16 December 1916.

Doña Paz Zamora Mascuñana discovered the Sucgang portrait in the home of her cousins who were also descendants of Francisco Pi y Margall, president of the First Spanish Republic in 1874. Mascuñana revealed the painting to the public in 1952 and donated it to the government in 1970.
