Sotto: Sen. Miriam taught me that senator-judges can't make motions
MANILA, Philippines — The late Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago told her colleagues that senator-judges, during an impeachment trial, cannot make motions and may only ask for clarifications, former Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III said on Friday. In a message to reporters, Sotto said the Senate’s decision to remand the articles of impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte to the House of Representatives, based on a motion raised by a senator-judge, was “flawed,” as only the defense and prosecution are allowed to file motions. “Sen. Miriam, who was a former RTC (Regional Trial Court) judge, taught me that in the 11th Congress,” Sotto said. “Senator-judges can only ask questions for clarification,” he added. “I suggest...
With pending trial, VP Sara flies to Malaysia instead haha
The Office of the Vice President (OVP) issued the statement around 11 a.m. to announce that Duterte had left the country without giving flight details or the date she is coming back. “Vice President Sara Duterte is traveling to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on a personal trip with her family,” the OVP said. But it said Duterte was also scheduled to attend an “OVP program consultation” with overseas Filipinos in the Malaysian capital on June 12, or on Philippine Independence Day. 18-5 votes to halt impeachment proceedings vs VP Sara
Vice President Sara Duterte's impeachment trial hit a major roadblock Tuesday night, June 10, as the Senate voted 18-5 to halt proceedings and require the House of Representatives first to prove the case is not unconstitutional. The five who voted against the motion were Senate Minority Leader Koko Pimentel, Sen. Risa Hontiveros, Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian, Sen. Grace Poe and Sen. Nancy Binay. Those who will not be a part of the next Congress — and hence, will not serve as senator-judges upon the case's carryover — are Binay, Pimentel and Poe. Pura Luka Vega acquitted by Manila RTC
In its ruling, the Manila court said, “Though the prosecution fell short of the required quantum of proof in the prosecution of the criminal case, the Court takes this opportunity to remind Pura Luka to be circumspect in his choice of medium or subject of his performances as a drag artist taking into account the society he belongs to. It is basic in the concept of social coexistence." “This is not to curtail his freedom or rights nor to regulate his acts to belong to a presumed majority but more to be compassionate on the community as a whole, especially with the accessibility of social media which makes it easy to record, upload and circulate materials which are readily available for consumption of the public," it added. Icc rejects FPRRD's 2nd bid to disqualify judges
In its June 9 decision, it said that following deliberations, the plenary of judges unanimously decided to dismiss Duterte’s disqualification submission. “A plenary of judges was convened on 9 June 2025 in order to consider the Application… The plenary of judges, acting unanimously, decided to reject the Applications. A fully reasoned decision of the plenary will follow,” the ICC said in a three-page ruling. This development means that both judges will continue to preside over the “Defense Challenge with Respect to Jurisdiction,” a critical phase in the proceedings concerning the ICC’s authority over the case involving Duterte. Robin Padilla files resolution ending VP impeachment proceedings
In his Senate Resolution 1371, Padilla said that the 19th Congress will adjourn sine die on Friday, June 13, and thus, "all pending matters and proceedings shall terminate upon the expiration of one (1) Congress." “Whereas, the Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Sara Zimmerman Duterte is one such pending matter, and the consideration thereof is one such pending proceeding,” the resolution read. “(F)rom all the foregoing, it is indubitably clear that the matter of the Articles of Impeachment against Vice-President Sara Zimmerman Duterte and its consideration by the present Senate cannot be fully accomplished by the expiration of the Nineteenth Congress on 30 June 2025, thereby resulting in its termination,” it added...
Prayer rally calling to impeach Sara set June 9-11
In an interview with Radio Veritas, Fr. Flavie Villanueva said that the gathering is to show that the Filipinos must unite to ensure that the impeachment trial begins immediately. “Jesus tells us ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life.’ There could be no way when people start to corrupt what is the truth and there can be no truth when people start spreading lies and more importantly, if a life is degraded and becomes a victim of `tokhang,’” Villanueva said. Duke Frasco expelled over not supporting Tamba Romualdez
The National Unity Party has expelled Deputy Speaker and Cebu 5th District Representative Vincent Franco "Duke” Frasco for refusing to sign a manifesto supporting Martin Romualdez's continued stay as Speaker of the House of Representatives. “Given that this has been the unanimous stance of our party, Duke’s one-man decision to withdraw support from the Speaker runs counter to the NUP’s official manifestation of support for Congressman Martin—and means his status as a member of our party has become untenable,” Villafuerte said. Drug war victims hits US over icc sanctions
In a joint statement issued over the weekend, Rise Up for Life and for Rights and the National Union of Peoples' Lawyers (NUPL) said the sanctions pose a serious threat to judicial independence and to victims' right to truth and justice. Executive Order 14203, issued by US President Donald Trump, sanctioned five ICC officials — including judges involved in high-profile cases targeting US allies and former heads of state. Among them is Judge Reine Adelaide Sophie Alapini Gansou, who sits on Duterte's pre-trial chamber and who also approved warrants of arrest against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes. DA to cut imported rice max SRP to P43
Initially set at P58 per kilo for five percent broken imported rice, the maximum SRP was gradually brought down to P45 by the end of March. Officials say the price ceiling has helped temper inflation, allowing for interest rate cuts that could stimulate economic activity and employment. Further adjustments are also expected under the DA’s Rice-for-All program, where five percent broken rice currently sells at P43 per kilo, 25 percent broken at P35, and 100 percent broken at P33. Fisherman finds drugs at ilocos sur coast
In a statement, PCG said the recently found sacks bear the same type of packaging as those found in waters off Pangasinan, which suggests these drifted northward with the current. On Friday, the Coast Guard seized P1.7 billion worth of suspected shabu recovered by local fisherfolk in the vicinity of the Pangasinan coast. The next day, over 20 sacks of suspected shabu were also recovered from Pangasinan waters. Source: Fishermen find 2 sacks of suspected îllégâl drugs in Ilocos Sur
US calls on allies to support sanctions against ICC
The United States urged its allies to rally behind its move to impose sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) for what it deemed were "illegitimate actions" against sovereign states. However, nearly all Western allies of the United States, along with Japan and South Korea, as well as the vast majority of Latin American countries and much of Africa, are parties to the statute. VP Sara: Torre's appointment is as sketchy as Tamba's
The vice president questioned Torre’s appointment, citing a Senate panel’s findings, which indicated that the new police chief could be held accountable for multiple offenses related to the arrest. “So, why would you make him chief of police? That decision is way too sketchy,” said Duterte in a chance interview in The Hague. The vice president compared Torre’s appointment to that of Leyte First District Representative Martin Romualdez to the House speakership. The vice president believes Romualdez should not have been made head of the chamber, as he is implicated in a bribery case in the United States.
