Globe Telecom also says Voice Over LTE (VoLTE) has been enabled in Metro Manila, Bulacan, Cavite, and Rizal for uninterrupted mobile internet use during calls
Telco giant Globe Telecom said on Tuesday, October 20, that it has completed the removal of consumer 3G SIM cards across its distribution chains.
Globe urged its users to shift to 4G LTE or 5G-ready SIM cards for an improved mobile internet experience.
"We urge our customers to switch to 4G LTE/5G-ready SIMs to be able to maximize Globe's network upgrades and optimization. Our stores and partner retailers are ready to make this switch easy, convenient, and safe for our customers," said Globe executive vice president for channel management Bernie Llamzon.
3G or third generation technology has been around for two decades. Mobile internet technology has been upgraded since then, with the introduction of 4G LTE or Long Term Evolution and 5G, though the latter has yet to be fully rolled out in the Philippines.
Globe said customers can message "SIM CHECK" to 8080 to see if they are still using 2G or 3G SIM cards. Customers can either set an appointment online via the queue link or through the GlobeOne app, or check the store list where they can have their SIM cards changed on a first come, first served basis.
Postpaid customers, meanwhile, can just request for a SIM change using the Globe app. The new SIM card will be delivered by a courier.
Voice Over LTE
Globe also said on Tuesday that it has enabled Voice Over LTE (VoLTE) technology in Metro Manila, Rizal, Bulacan, and Cavite, which would allow consumers to use the internet uninterrupted during calls.
Globe said VoLTE has 3 times more voice capacity than 3G and up to 6 times more than 2G.
"This allows the network to accommodate more customers making calls at the same time with faster call setup time, high audio and video quality, and even lower possibility of drop calls, providing more efficient and convenient ways of communicating," Globe said.
The telco giant added that consumers can check whether their phones support this technology.
There are no additional charges for calls over VoLTE, Globe said
