De La Salle University and the DLSU MBA Alumni Club recently hosted the 4th Strategic Management Convention (STRAMACON) last June 6, 2015 at the multi-purpose hall of the Br. Andrew Gonzalez FSC Building. Entitled “The Implications of the ASEAN Integration and the Business Sector’s Readiness for the ASEAN Open Market,” the forum explores the various opportunities and challenges that local businesses will encounter once regional economic integration is completed.
Notable speakers included Assistant Secretary Ceferino Rodolfo of the Department of Tourism and Industry (DTI), Brenda Mendoza of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), and DLSU Ramon V. Rosario College of Business (RVRCOB) Department Chair Dr. Benito Teehankee.
Teehankee, whose presentation was entitled “Perspectives on the ASEAN Integration,” remarked on the country’s unique position within the region due to its large population and its non-contiguous location in relation to its neighbors.
Teehankee opined that there are advantages and disadvantages which the country must come to terms with. Leaders in both the private and public sectors must be aware and willing to study. Additionally, he warned against misplaced optimism and that market liberalization does not automatically lead to equity and, instead, may lead to the opposite.
“Systems must be in place before liberalization is let loose,” he said.
On competitiveness vis-à-vis the changing business landscape and the forthcoming ASEAN market integration, Teehankee pointed out that businesses must deliver products which deliver real value while meeting real human needs.
“We need more businesses, we need more investments, and we need more products that will really help people become better human beings,” he said.
STRAMACON, now on its 4th year, is known to feature notable speakers such as Commissioner of Internal Revenue Kim Henares, former Development Bank of the Philippines CEO and President Gil Buenaventura, Manila Times CEO Dante Ang, and Globe Telecoms CEO Ernest Cu.
