American video streaming service Netflix on Thursday rolled out its mobile-only subscription plan in the Philippines as it aims to capture the low-income segment of its local market.

“We are launching a new plan for the Philippines... We are super excited to announce that it will be offered for P149 only,” Netflix director for Product Innovation Patrick Flemming told reporters during a video teleconference from Los Angeles, California on Wednesday.

At P149 per month, Flemming said Netflix subscribers will be able to “enjoy all the films and shows on uninterrupted and without ads on one smartphone or tablet at a time.”

The mobile plan is in addition to Netflix’s existing plan offerings — basic at P369 per month, standard
at P459 a month, and premium at P549 per month.

Flemming said Netflix is optimistic about offering the mobile-only subscription in the Philippines as Filipinos spend more than three hours a day watching online content on mobile phones.

"We’re enthusiastic to introduce the mobile plan in the Philippines to make it even easier for anyone with a smartphone to enjoy Netflix. At home or on the go, now more people can watch all the shows and movies Netflix has to offer, wherever and whenever they want,” he said.

To avail of the mobile plan, individuals may opt to download the Netflix app or visit the streaming platform’s website and select the P149 per month plan.

Netflix has reported that its subscribers grew 20% by 8.8 million year-on-year in 2019, bringing the total to 16 million. — BAP, GMA News
