This handout photograph released by The European Southern Observatory (ESO) on February 14, 2020 shows the red supergiant star Betelgeuse, which has been undergoing unprecedented dimming, taken with the SPHERE instrument on ESO’s Very Large Telescope. One of the brightest stars in the Milky Way, the star in the Orion constellation has lost much of its brightness in recent months, while the images also show an apparent change in its shape. ESO/AFP

PARIS — Astronomers have managed to take pictures of Betelgeuse showing that the star, one of the brightest in the Milky Way, has been losing luminosity over recent months, the European Southern Observatory (ESO) said on Friday.

The mysterious dimming of one of the most visible stars in the Orion constellation has astronomers scratching their heads, with some saying Betelgeuse could be about to explode while others point to passing conditions.
