The Philippines is getting a more corrupt and less democratic state under President Rodrigo Duterte. That's according to recent rankings published by international agencies.

The Philippines is the 113 least corrupt nation out of 180 countries, according to the 2019 Corruption Perceptions Index reported by Transparency International. That's 14 notches below the 2018 ranking and 18 down from 2015 before Duterte becomes President!

Meanwhile, the Philippines slid down one notch in the Economist Intelligence Unit's (EIU) Democracy Index for 2019, to 54th place.

That's on top of two notches it slid in 2018.

Rising corruption means that President Duterte's anti-corruption rhetoric that helped him grow in power was just that — rhetoric. Meanwhile, his death squads and attacks on media have undermined the country's democratic institutions, without helping the Philippines in the corruption front.

Contrary to your assumption that I'm "ignoring the fact that most of these countries have massively transformed politically, ...", I'm actually recognizing their progress brought forth by exploitation and usurpation of weak countries mostly. When it comes to global economy and the influences exerted by few, elite countries there are no past. They are ever present. In addition, they did not move past their colonial history. They just morphed into a different form.

Way to ignore the fundamental historical cultural and industrial shift that took place in these societies a few centuries ago which led them to where they are today, and way to grossly oversimplify their success and achievements down to just their colonial past. Modern Western societies were built on the backbone of the Enlightenment which was the catalyst for the Industrial Revolution and all the positive changes we see today. They were already rich and advanced way, way before, and possessed the right tools and values to succeed and sustain that success in the long run. Their colonialism were preceded by economic prosperity and progress. They could have never conquered the world if they weren't already rich in the first place.

It was scientific advancement and rational thought that created the modern world which is why societal success is not only exclusive to pillaging nations. There are a handful of successful nations that didn't colonize like South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore, and non-colonial Western nations.

Plus, all advanced societies tried to conquer another and expand their spheres of influence and territories. Some were just more successful than the others. You can also find examples of countries that colonized and did not prosper in the end but have regressed instead and turned into backwater shitholes like the Middle East and RUSSIA. The main fundamental reasons from where all other reasons and causes can be derived: irrationality and conservatism.
