#3: Anencephaly
Anencephaly is the absence of a major portion of the brain, skull, and scalp that occurs during embryonic development. However, it is widely accepted fact that children born with this disorder only lack the largest part of the brain consisting mainly of the cerebral hemispheres.
Anencephaly is one of the most common types of neural tube defect, affecting about 1 in 1,000 pregn@ncies. However, most of these pregn@ncies end in miscarriage, so the prevalence of this condition in newborns is much lower. An estimated 1 in 10,000 infants in the United States is born with anencephaly.
