Shalom.
John 8:56-59
"Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad."
So the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?"
Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am."
Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus hid Himself and went out of the temple.
Let's dissect John 8:56-59
1. His Audience - Jewish Leaders.
Jesus knew that these people are well educated with The Old Testament. This is a form of setting the atmosphere right.
Him giving clues ==> People around Him whom should understand it ==> Us learning from it.
2. JESUS gave clue that He is in fact GOD.
Check this words:
"....before Abraham WAS born, I AM."
WAS vs. AM
Jesus sets the record straight that Abraham indeed HAVE A BEGINNING AND ENDING thus making Abraham PART OF THE CHRONOS/TIME = WAS.
But, be.ar in mind that when JESUS was explaining who He is, He used the word:
I AM.
Which is in fact a CLUE that "AM" is GREATER that "WAS".
Him being greater than Abraham.
Him being greater than time.
Because HE IS NOT PART OF THE CHRONOS/TIME.
Because if He also have beginning and ending, He would have said:
"........before Abraham was born, I was." BUT HE DID NOT SAY IT LIKE THIS.
3. The Connection to Exodus 3:13-15
When God was talking to Moses via burning bush, Moses asked "what is your name God?"
God said "I AM WHO I AM....... I AM has sent you"
4. The Jewish Leaders believed that Jesus commits "blasphemy".
These Jewish Leaders believed that Jesus commits blasphemy because He made Himself equal with God (Read John 5:18) when He said the "I AM". Again, Jesus knew how these people think. Jesus also knew that they are well aware of the old testament. Lev 24:16 said that whoever commits blasphemy shall be put to death.
Now, this question is for you who are reading this...
Did Jesus lied and commited blasphemy when He said He is equal with God?
Or He said the plain truth and He is in fact God?
Choose your answer wisely.
God bless..
Jesus Christ is coming back.
