Usually a "hâcked" PS3 has been kept on an old firmware version and some kind of softmod is installed that enables piracy. A full restore of the console and installation of the latest version of the firmware should take care of it. It would be uncommon to have some sort of hardware mod in a PS3. This would also ensure the new buyer wouldn't have any of her personal information left on the machine.

if you want to be sure, download the ps3 version of retroarch, put it on a thumb drive, and if it runs on your ps3 it's hácked (aka jâilbroken).
