One of the reason behind it is Microsoft was just about to commercialise Office for Mac, which ended up as a great source of income for Microsoft.
Maybe it was just a rumour but I heard that when Apple was struggling to survive in the 1990s, Bill Gates kept it alive as he wanted some competition around to keep Microsoft on its toes.
If true, how much stock did he purchase and at what price? I imagine Apple shares could have been bought then at a tiny fraction of their current value.
