  • Today I want to write about a really cool fish that has an amazing Hawaiian name, the reef triggerfish.

Here are five interesting facts about them:
    1. These colourful fish grow up to 25 cm long.
    2. In Hawaii, reef triggerfish are also known as the humuhumunukunukuapua’a. They are the state fish of Hawaii.
    3. They are excellent swimmers and use their special fins to go forwards, backwards or to burst away very quickly if they need to. When they swim away from a predator, they can make a grunting sound to warn other fish of the danger. They then hide in small crevices and use the trigger at the top of their body to lock themselves in.
    4. They feed on algae, small crustaceans, worms, brittlestars, sea urchins and snails.
    5. Reef triggerfish are quite common and can be found in shallow water near reefs in the waters of Hawaii, Polynesia Australia, Micronesia, Melanesia, the Philippines, the coast of Africa, the Red Sea and southern Japan.
