The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (ゼルダの伝説 ティアーズ オブ ザ キングダム, Zeruda no Densetsu: Tiāzu obu za Kingudamu) is an action-adventure video game developed and published by Nintendo. It was released on May 12, 2023 for Nintendo Switch. It is part of The Legend of Zelda series, and is the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017).
Tears of the Kingdom was conceived after ideas for downloadable content (DLC) for Breath of the Wild exceeded its scope. Its development was led by Nintendo's Entertainment Planning & Development (EPD) division, with Breath of the Wild director Hidemaro Fujibayashi and producer Eiji Aonuma reprising their roles. A teaser was shown at E3 2019 and an official announcement at E3 2021. Tears of the Kingdom was initially planned for release in 2022 before being delayed to May 2023. It received acclaim for its improvements, expanded open world, and features that encourage exploration and experimentation. It sold over 10 million copies in its first three days of release and 18 million by June 2023.
