Description:

'Toon Daddy: Twelve Months in Vietnam as a Commissioned Officer and Combat Helicopter Pilot Joseph P. (Pat) Dougan arrived in Vietnam as the youngest First Lieutenant in the 187th Assault Helicopter Company - a twenty-one-year-old Real Live Officer with a brand-new set of wings and no real understanding of what either would require. What followed was twelve months that would define the rest of his life. As a slick platoon commander, fire team leader, air mission commander, and pilot of the smoke ship his unit called SMOKEY, Dougan flew into situations that never made the history books but lived permanently in the minds of the men who were there. This is not a combat memoir measured in body counts and battlefield statistics. It is something rarean honest account of what war does to an ordinary young man who was never meant to be ordinary again. Written originally for his daughters, 'Toon Daddy is the book Pat Dougan's family always knew existed but never fully heard at the dinner table. It is the story behind the silencethe humor that kept men sane, the losses that didn't, the leadership lessons learned at altitude with no margin for error, and the long, complicated journey home to a country that had moved on without them. For every wife who watched her husband return a stranger. For every child who grew up in the shadow of a war their father never fully explained. And for every reader who wants to understand why some men carry a war inside them long after the shooting stopeven if they never took a bullet. 'Toon Daddy is a Vietnam memoir for people who think they've already read enough Vietnam memoirs. They haven't read this one.
