Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (メタルギア ライジング リベンジェンス, Metaru Gia Raijingu: Ribenjensu) is a video game produced by Platinum Games, directed by Kenji Saito and published by Konami for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in February 2013, and for Microsoft Windows in January 2014. In September 2012, without explaining why, Konami announced that Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was a PlayStation 3 exclusive in Japan.
The game was originally announced and developed by Kojima Productions under the name Metal Gear Solid: Rising, an action game set between the events of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. In December 2011, it was announced that the game had a new name and would be developed by Platinum Games. According to Kojima, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is not officially "part of the Metal Gear Solid series." The game's setting was altered in such a way that some events occurred and others did not, creating a parallel universe to allow the Platinum Games team greater creative freedom. However, Kojima Productions was responsible for the storyline and character design.
The story is a spin-off of the Metal Gear series, with a unique plot that takes place four years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and focuses on the cyborg ninja named Raiden, in a fight against the self-proclaimed private military company involved in terrorist activities, Desperado Enterprises.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was well-received by critics despite some initial negative reactions due to Platinum Games' involvement. The game was praised for its cutting-edge system and its use of elements from the Metal Gear series, despite being an action game. However, it was criticized for its camera and the short length of the story.
In 2017, the Xbox 360 version became backward compatible and can be played on Xbox One.
