The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (ゼルダの伝説 ブレス オブ ザ ワイルド, Zeruda no Densetsu: Buresu obu za Wairudo) is an action-adventure video game developed by Nintendo Entertainment Planning & Development and published by Nintendo. It is the nineteenth title in The Legend of Zelda series and was released worldwide for Wii U and Nintendo Switch on March 3, 2017. The story follows Link, who awakens in a devastated Hyrule after a hundred years of sleep and must recover his memories and defeat the evil caused by Calamity Ganon. Gameplay is presented in an open world, and players can freely explore it, completing different types of quests and solving puzzles to obtain rewards.
The development of Breath of the Wild began shortly after the release of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and lasted five years. The team intended to reinvent the series' structure, thus introducing unprecedented elements such as a detailed physics engine, high-definition visuals, and voice acting. The game world was designed to reward exploration and experimentation, with the story conceived to be completed in a non-linear fashion. Breath of the Wild was originally slated for release in 2015 as a Wii U exclusive, but was delayed twice due to development issues. It ended up serving as one of the launch titles for the Switch and the last game published by Nintendo for the Wii U.
Breath of the Wild was critically acclaimed upon release, praised for the depth of its open-world gameplay and attention to detail, with several specialized publications considering it one of the best video games of all time, the only criticisms being directed at minor technical issues at the time of its debut. Two downloadable content packs titled The Master Trials and The Champions' Ballad were released a few months later, adding new game modes, items, puzzles, challenges, and story elements. Breath of the Wild won numerous awards, including many Game of the Year awards. Furthermore, it was a huge commercial success, with over twenty million copies sold worldwide.
