A study method for the open-book CFPS exam: know the Fire Protection Handbook, find the page, beat the clock.

What you'll learn
⚡ Explain how the CFPS exam is built and how its eight domains are weighted.
⚡ Route any CFPS question from its domain to the right section of the Fire Protection Handbook.
⚡ Find an answer fast with section-page numbers, the index, and table and figure numbers.
⚡ Tab and organise your Handbook for fast lookups under time pressure.
⚡ Plan eight weeks of study and use practice tests to find and close your weak areas.
⚡ Read a question for its noun, conditions and units, and pace a three-hour open-book exam.

Requirements
❗ Your own printed copy of the NFPA Fire Protection Handbook, 2023 edition. The course does not include Handbook text.
❗ A working knowledge of fire protection. No prior exam experience is needed.

Description
The CFPS is an open-book exam with one reference, and that is the trap. The Fire Protection Handbook is a very large book, and most candidates who struggle do not lack knowledge. They run out of time looking for the answer. This course teaches one thing: how to study for the CFPS so that, on exam day, you go from a question to the right page quickly and with confidence.

You will learn how the current exam is built and how its eight domains are weighted, then how the 2023 Handbook is organised: two volumes, twenty-one sections, section-page numbers, the combined index, and the numbering of tables, figures and formulas. You will get a domain-to-section routing map, a tabbing plan, an eight-week study plan, a practice-test routine, and a way to read each question so you know which section to open before you open the book.

Then the method is put to work. Worked lookups cover fire science and people, detection and alarm, water supplies and suppression, confining fires, hazards and the fire service. Each one goes from the question to the domain, the section, the index word and the page, with the trap that sits next to the right answer. A timed walkthrough of ten exam-style questions puts the method under the clock, and a one-page recap sums it up.

Every page cited in the lectures was checked against the 2023 Handbook, and every lecture was reviewed and approved by the instructor before release. The lectures describe where to find each answer in plain words. They do not reproduce Handbook text, so you will need your own copy of the Handbook.

About the instructor: Hussein Ragab is a Chartered Engineer, a member of CIBSE, a member of ASHRAE and a Certified Fire Protection Specialist, with more than 14 years of mechanical and fire protection design on high-rise, hospital and mixed-use projects.

This course is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Always confirm exam details against NFPA's current CFPS program overview.
