Description This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
VAT touches almost every part of running a UK business: the prices you set, the invoices you send, the purchases you make, and the cash you need ready when a return is due. This course explains how UK VAT works in practice and shows you how to handle it accurately, step by step.
You'll start with the fundamentals: what VAT is, why it's charged, and how output VAT and input VAT offset to give the amount you pay to HMRC or reclaim from it. From there you'll move into the practical work: calculating VAT from net and gross amounts, deciding who is a taxable person, knowing when registration is required, and choosing the correct VAT treatment for a sale.
What the course covers
- How VAT works for businesses, including terminology and calculations (VAT fractions, discounts, credit notes and common calculation errors)
- Taxable persons, business and non-business activity, agents and principals, VAT groups, charities and overseas businesses
- Compulsory and voluntary VAT registration, effective dates, deregistration and late registration
- Standard, reduced and zero-rated supplies, exempt and outside-scope items, and mixed or composite supplies
- VAT invoices, credit and debit notes, source documents, the VAT account and the audit trail
- VAT on goods, services, vehicles and motoring costs, plus deposits, vouchers, memberships and disbursements
- Tax points, place of supply, imports, exports, postponed VAT accounting and reverse charge
- Preparing and reviewing the VAT return, input tax recovery and partial exemption
- Compliance controls, reconciliations and preparing for HMRC checks
- Corrections, bad debt relief, penalties and interest, and special schemes (Flat Rate, Cash Accounting, Annual Accounting, Retail and Margin)
- Making Tax Digital: digital records, compatible software, digital links, VAT codes and submitting returns
Throughout, the course focuses on the decisions that cause real problems: which rate applies, what evidence you need, which date controls the VAT entry, and what to check before you submit. Worked examples with figures show how each idea works in a real transaction.
