Requirements
No qualifications or prior knowledge are required. The course is designed for beginners. You only need an interest in questions of meaning, philosophy, faith, and ordinary human life, plus a willingness to reflect honestly on your own assumptions, experiences, and ways of seeing the world.
Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence for video, script and audio. All information is from the mind of Jack Robertson, Author of the Living Under the Sun Philosophy
Living Under the Sun is a beginner-level existential philosophy course exploring meaning, purpose, uncertainty, and what it means to live truthfully within the limits of human life.
The course begins with Ecclesiastes and its unusual description of life "under the sun." Its recurring word hevel can mean vapour, mist, or breath: something real, but temporary and difficult to grasp. Rather than simply concluding that life is meaningless, we ask a different question: can life be meaningful even when we cannot completely understand, control, or possess it?
From there, the course explores whether reality can be genuinely understood without being completely mastered. We consider what it means for the world to be intelligible, and introduce the idea of the Logos as part of the Christian account of why reality is ordered and meaningful.
The course then turns toward the human person. Are we simply observers of reality, or are we participants who constantly respond through our beliefs, desires, relationships, choices, and actions?
We also explore how our understanding of reality can become distorted. Using the image of a "twisted map," we examine how false assumptions can affect the way we see ourselves, other people, and the world.
The later part of the course develops the Christian response to human brokenness through Christ, the Incarnation, death, Resurrection, Ascension, the Holy Spirit, the Church, and New Creation.
Throughout the course, the aim is not to pretend that every mystery can be solved. Instead, Living Under the Sun develops a way of thinking that takes truth seriously while also recognising the limits of human knowledge.
No previous study of philosophy, theology, or Christianity is required. The course is designed for beginners who want to think more deeply about meaning, purpose, reality, uncertainty, death, hope, and how our understanding of the world affects the way we actually live.
Who this course is for
This course is for anyone exploring questions of meaning, purpose, uncertainty, faith, suffering, and how to live well when life cannot be fully understood or controlled. It is especially suitable for beginners interested in philosophy, existential questions, Ecclesiastes, Christian thought, or the Living Under the Sun framework. No previous study of philosophy or theology is required.
