A typical daisy appears to have a single flower surrounded by white petals. Botanically, however, that entire structure is a flower head containing many tiny individual flowers called florets.

The yellow center contains numerous small flowers packed closely together. The structures that look like petals around the outside are also specialized florets.

This arrangement belongs to the huge plant family known as Asteraceae. Packing many flowers together can make the plant more conspicuous to pollinators.

One familiar “flower” can therefore actually be a whole collection of flowers working as one visual display.
