Many plants can produce adventitious roots from stems, leaves, or other tissues rather than only from their original root system. This ability is what makes techniques such as stem cuttings possible.

Gardeners can place an appropriate cutting in water or growing medium and, under suitable conditions, new roots may develop. Different species have very different abilities to do this.

A single healthy piece of a plant can therefore sometimes become an entirely new plant.
