A young leaf doesn't always resemble the mature leaves that eventually appear on the same plant.
Certain tropical plants produce dramatically different leaf shapes as they develop. Monsteras, for example, can produce increasingly divided or fenestrated leaves as the plant matures.
Light, support, age, and growing conditions can all influence how the leaves develop.
This means a young plant can look surprisingly different from the mature specimen it will eventually become. (RHS)
