Dogs can use their extraordinary sense of smell for recreational activities called scent work.
A dog is trained to locate a hidden odor and then communicate to its handler that it has found the source. Searches can take place indoors, outdoors, or in containers, depending on the activity.
The sport works with a dog's natural desire to investigate scents rather than relying entirely on physical speed or agility. It can therefore provide mental stimulation for dogs that enjoy searching. (akc.org)
