Indigenous communities in the Philippines have developed detailed knowledge about edible plants, fruits, roots, and other naturally occurring foods.
This knowledge includes recognizing which species are safe, where they grow, and when they are best collected.
Such information is usually learned from older members of the community through observation and practical experience.
It can also include methods for preparing foods that should not be eaten raw. The knowledge represents generations of experimentation and environmental observation.
What looks like a simple walk through a forest can therefore involve an enormous amount of inherited information.
