The Bontoc have documented agricultural traditions involving rituals connected with farming.
One particularly unusual practice involved scarecrows and other protective devices being placed around ripening rice fields. These included traditional objects such as the pa-chek and ki-lao.
Their purpose was to help protect the developing rice from birds, rats, monkeys, and wild pigs. The protection of the crop could therefore involve both practical methods and traditional beliefs.
The NCCA inventory records these practices as part of Bontoc cultural heritage.
