🕯️ Traditions Indonesian and Malay Communities Use Poetry to Speak Indirectly

Pantun is a traditional form of Malay verse practiced across Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei.

The most common form has four lines with an A-B-A-B rhyme pattern. Pantun can E×ρréšš love, family relationships, community values, nature, and emotions. It is performed at weddings, ceremonies, cultural events, and official gatherings.

One fascinating feature is that the poetic form can allow people to discuss sensitive subjects indirectly and politely.

UNESCO notes that pantun has even been used as a form of diplomatic conflict resolution. The tradition was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List in 2025.
