The Turkmen alabay, a large traditional shepherd and guardian dog, is more than a breed in Turkmen culture. Communities have preserved the breed's characteristics for centuries through careful breeding and training.

There are customs connected with the birth and naming of puppies, as well as protective amulets associated with the dogs.

People of different ages participate in caring for and training alabay dogs. Experienced breeders pass their knowledge to younger practitioners through mentoring and formal training.

Alabays also appear in poems, proverbs, celebrations, and even a dedicated national holiday.

UNESCO recognized the art of breeding Turkmen alabay as intangible cultural heritage in 2025.
