Learn maritime radio systems, distress procedures, DSC, and IMO communication standards for safe operations

What you'll learn

Explain the core functions of GMDSS and how IMO and SOLAS standards shape maritime communications.
Identify the correct use of VHF, MF, HF, DSC, satellite services, and locating devices across GMDSS sea areas.
Apply distress, urgency, safety, and routine communication procedures using proper marine radio language.
Analyze common onboard communication errors, false alerts, and compliance gaps to improve operational readiness.
Requirements

No prior experience required
Basic interest in maritime operations, shipboard safety, or marine communications
Description
GMDSS and IMO Maritime Communications gives you a practical introduction to the communication systems, procedures, and standards that support safety at sea. You will learn how the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System works, why standardized maritime communications matter, and how IMO and SOLAS requirements shape shipboard radio operations. This course is designed to help you build clear operational understanding rather than memorize isolated terms.
Across the course, you will study GMDSS foundations, communication priorities, marine radio language, and disciplined voice procedure. You will also explore sea areas, VHF, MF, HF, Digital Selective Calling, satellite services, EPIRB, SART, and maritime safety information tools such as NAVTEX. The lessons explain how distress, urgency, safety, and routine traffic are handled, along with operator responsibilities, logkeeping, testing, maintenance, and inspection readiness.
The course progresses from core concepts into step by step operational use and scenario based practice. You will work through coastal and ocean passage examples, review common communication errors, and understand how correct message structure and equipment selection support search and rescue coordination. This makes the training useful for deck officers, cadets, marine learners, and shipboard personnel who need a clearer understanding of GMDSS procedures and IMO communication standards.
  • Understand GMDSS functions, sea areas, and equipment selection
  • Practice distress, urgency, safety, and routine communication procedures
  • Recognize compliance, testing, logging, and inspection expectations
  • Improve radio discipline and reduce common onboard communication errors
By the end of the course, you will be able to interpret key maritime communication requirements, choose appropriate systems for different situations, and communicate with greater clarity during routine operations and onboard emergencies.
Who this course is for

Deck cadets and junior deck officers building foundational GMDSS knowledge
Maritime students preparing for shipboard communication duties and safety procedures
Shipboard personnel who want a clearer understanding of distress and routine radio operations
Marine professionals seeking a practical refresher on IMO communication standards and procedures
