Responsiveness—showing that you understand and care about another person—is generally considered positive in relationships.
But researchers found an interesting difference when people had just met.
In several studies, men tended to perceive a responsive female stranger as more feminine and sexually attractive.
For women evaluating responsive male strangers, the picture was more complicated.
The researchers suggested that women may sometimes be uncertain about what unusually responsive behavior from a new man means—whether it reflects genuine care, an attempt to impress, or something else.
So the same warm behavior isn't necessarily interpreted identically by everyone during early dating.
Being caring can matter, but trust in the intention behind that care may need time to develop.
